Rose and James: A Metis Scottish Love Story
Rose and James: A Metis Scottish Love Story chronicles the story of Rose, a Metis woman at Batoche and James, a Scottish Highlander forcefully sent to Canada. They meet on opposing battle lines at the height of the Northwest Resistance with James fighting on behalf of the Northwest Mounted Police and Rose defending her people, her home and her river. In this adaptation of Rome and Juliet, we watch as Rose and James’s love story unfolds through the Northwest Resistance with the Nurse and Charlie (Mercutio) by their sides.
Playwrights notes
Two Households, both alike in dignity.
Along the river where we lay our scene.
From the historic Battle of Batoche.
Where the river’s blood makes hands unclean.
Of the Northwest Mounted police and the fearless Halfbreed fighters.
And a pair of star crossed lovers.
Rose.
And James.
It is now the 90 minute traffic of our stage.
From the stars and the river to the sea and the sky.
The Moon and the Sun
And the star crossed lovers' dreams.
